Charges:  Murder with Special Circumstances; 3 counts of Robbery; 3 counts of Carjacking; Kidnapping; and Torture

Exposure:   Life Without the Possibility of Parole (LWOP)

Results: Not Guilty of Murder and all other counts!

Charges: Murder; attempted murder; felony shooting at an inhabited dwelling; felony second degree auto burglary with a gun use allegation; felony evading arrest

Exposure: 44 years to Life

Results: Not Guilty of Murder; Not Guilty of Attempted Murder.  Defendant was found guilty of misdemeanor negligent discharge of a firearm; felony auto burglary while armed; and felony evading arrest, only.  Defendant was sentenced to 5 years 8 months.  Co-defendant, represented by other private counsel, was convicted of murder and is serving life.  Each defendant had a separate jury, and Mr. Lawrence did two jury trials to achieve these results.

Charges:  Murder with a knife; Robbery; 2 counts Criminal Threats, plus one “strike” prior, and a 5 year prison prior [Defendant stabbed victim 31 times]

Results: Not guilty of murder; guilty of LIO voluntary manslaughter only; guilty of felony auto theft; priors found true after a jury trial.  Defendant was still facing over 28 years in prison, but the trial verdict was overturned for judicial error because a Motion for a New Trial filed by Mr. Lawrence was granted.  Plea bargain directly with the judge for 11 years.

Exposure: 41 years to Life

Results: Not Guilty of Murder; Not Guilty of Attempted Murder ; Guilty of LIO of Voluntary Manslaughter with knife only.  Sentenced to 12 years.

Results: Not Guilty of Murder; guilty of LIO Involuntary Manslaughter, Assault by means likely to produce GBI; Elder Abuse with GBI; prior “strike” found true, doubling the sentence to 15 years.

Results: After a jury trial, defendant was convicted of PC §261.5(c), statutory rape [no sexual registration required] and 3 priors only; Hung Jury on the rest and later Dismissed by DA.  Defendant was sentenced to 6 years at half time.  The verdict was overturned on appeal for issues Mr. Lawrence briefed during trial; Mr. Lawrence did not handle the retrial of the case.
